Dear John,
Last Friday, the country marked the 30th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) with a moving, memorable White House celebration that I was honored to join. It was an incredible privilege to have a private audience with President Biden and a few others who helped write this monumentally transformative law and who joined me in pounding the halls of Congress to get it passed.
VAWA changed our country forever. Its enactment 30 years ago was a major turning point. We will never return to the days when domestic violence and sexual assault were hidden and ignored. It changed not just our laws and our government, but also our culture. In the years after VAWA was enacted, the issue came out of the shadows, our federal government and other sectors of society stepped in, and domestic violence against adult women declined by more than 60 percent and rapes and sexual assaults by nearly as much.
Last week’s celebration was as meaningful as it was hard-earned. President Biden called VAWA the “proudest legislative achievement” of his long, storied career. We agree. I hope you will take a moment to read my reflections on this anniversary, in a piece Ms. Magazine published

FUTURES is proud to have led the charge, alongside survivors and other advocates, in enacting VAWA in 1994 and has supported its reauthorization ever since.
Without question, this transformative, imperfect but ever-improving law brought enormous progress, but the work isn’t done. That’s why we worked with the Biden/Harris administration on many of the executive actions

they announced last week, including measures to help states keep guns away from abusers, stop online harassment and abuse, and help meet the needs of children exposed to family, domestic, or dating violence and to support their non-abusing parents.
