Dear John,
Last Friday, the nation marked the 30th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) with a moving, memorable White House celebration that I was honored to join. It was an incredible privilege to have a private audience with President Biden and a few others who helped write this monumentally
transformative law and who joined me in pounding the halls of Congress to get it passed.
VAWA changed our country forever. Its enactment 30 years ago was a major turning point. We will never return to the days when domestic violence and sexual assault were hidden and ignored. It changed not just our laws and our government, but also our culture. In the years after VAWA was enacted, the issue came out of the shadows, our federal government and other sectors of society stepped in, and domestic violence against adult women declined by more than 60 percent
and rapes and sexual assaults by nearly as much.
