ADL Welcomes Hate Crime Charge in Blaze Bernstein Killing
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office filed a hate crime enhancement against Samuel Woodward in the January killing of his former high school classmate, Blaze Bernstein. Prosecutors allege Woodward targeted Bernstein because of his sexual orientation. Woodward also faces felony murder charges in connection with the death of Bernstein, who was found in a shallow grave in Orange County with more than 20 stab wounds. Woodward is believed to have had ties with the neo-Nazi group, Atomwaffen Division, which celebrates violence and hatred.

ADL Offers Reward for Information in Swastika Graffiti Incident at Indiana Synagogue
Last Saturday, members of Congregation Shaarey Tefilla in Carmel discovered anti-Semitic graffiti, including swastikas and Nazi imagery painted on the building’s shed. In response, ADL’s Midwest Regional Office is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. “This heinous incident demonstrates, yet again, the need for Indian to pass a hate crimes law and send the message that Hoosiers will not tolerate crimes targeting people because of who they are,” Lonnie Nasatir, Midwest Regional Director, said.

Nazi Flag Raised in Wyoming Park; Law Enforcement Investigating as Potential Bias-Motivated Crime
ADL’s Mountain States Regional Office expressed anger and outrage that an American flag was removed and replaced with a Nazi flag on a flagpole atop the Washington Park band shell in Laramie. “It is appalling and outrageous that anyone would cast aside the American flag in a public park and replace it with an ugly symbol of the Nazi regime,” Jeremy Shaver, Mountain States Senior Associate Director, said.

A View from Southern Israel
In a personal reflection, ADL’s Israel Director Carole Nuriel recounts her recent trip to southern Israel, specifically the Sdot Negev Regional Council. The purpose of the trip was to express ADL’s support and solidary with the residents of the region enduring rocket attacks, explosive kites, and fire balloons from Hamas; and to tour the vicinity of the Gaza border together with the council’s chief security officer. “There is something very powerful about the dissonance that you feel when you reach these areas – on the one hand, the pastoral scenery and the serene and welcoming local residents, and on the other, the knowledge that at any moment, the calm could be violated – a siren
could go off warning of an incoming rocket or an incendiary balloon or kite could fly in and ignite an entire area; or sniper fire,” Nuriel wrote.

It’s Time to Examine How Online Disinformation Affects Social Groups
Samuel Wooley, a Belfer Fellow with ADL’s Center for Technology and Society, takes a closer look at computational propaganda – the use of automation and algorithms on social media to manipulate public opinion. “We must work to protect social groups and issue advocates from this burgeoning form of political manipulation and defamation because their participation is integral to a functioning democracy,” Wooley wrote.
