[[link removed]] In a new podcast, the Young Center's Technical Assistance Program Co-Director Kelly Albinak Kribs discusses the story of a U.S. Marine who used the 2021 fall of Afghanistan and its ensuing chaos as a way to adopt an Afghan baby girl, known as Baby Doe, under questionable circumstances.
The case sparked intense ethical debates and legal battles, prompting the Young Center to submit an amicus brief to the Virginia Court of Appeals in favor of the reunification of the baby with her biological family. While the court voided the adoption in July, Baby Doe has yet to be reunified with her family.

A Child Advocate is an adult who volunteers to spend time with and advocate on behalf of an individual unaccompanied immigrant child while he, she or they is subject to deportation proceedings. We welcome volunteers from all cultures, professions, races, ethnicities and social backgrounds. Advocates must be at least 21 years old. Kibin Alleyne was joined by Ari Cannavino, a New York Volunteer Coordinator for the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights, to discuss how they are hosting a local Volunteer Child Advocate training for residents in New York City and surrounding areas.
Help is needed for youth who enter the United States without a parent or guardian ( Adriana Cardona-Maguidad, WBEZ [[link removed]] )
In Chicago, WBEZ interviewed staff from our local office about their upcoming Volunteer Child Advocate trainings. Advocates are expected to visit children in federal custody once a week until they are released to sponsors who are either family members or foster parents. Alli Gattari, Volunteer Coordinator with the Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights said “We're hoping to recruit volunteers who speak French, Haitian Creole, Wolof, Arabic, in addition to other languages that are commonly spoken by young people that we work with, such as Spanish.”
