- Radio host [Charlamagne tha God]([link removed]) who thinks Kamala Harris has been unburdened by her previous role as President Biden's No. 2.

At least four people were killed and nine were hospitalized in a school shooting in Georgia on Wednesday morning.

- A shooter, identified as a 14-year-old boy, opened fire at the Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, [according to CNN]([link removed]). The suspect is alive and was taken into custody. As many as 30 people may be injured, the outlet reported earlier in the day citing law enforcement officials, although it was unclear how many injuries were from gunshot wounds.

- “This is an awful thing that we put our kids through,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), a leading advocate for gun control measures in Congress, told What A Day. “I don't think we need to choose to force our kids to live in fear when they walk through the hallways of their schools. That's ridiculous. It only happens in America, and it continues to be a choice.”

-  “It doesn’t have to be this way,” Vice President Kamala Harris told a crowd in New Hampshire during a campaign stop, while calling for an end to the gun violence epidemic in the United States. David Hogg, a founder of March for Our Lives movement, [wrote on X]([link removed]) that “it’s fucking unacceptable we act like there’s nothing we can do.”

[What A Day]([link removed])

The shooting is just another example of how vulnerable Americans remain to gun violence, especially in states with weak gun control laws.

- We don’t know the motive of the shooter or how they obtained their weapon yet. But Georgia is ranked 46th in the country for gun control, [according to Everytown for Gun Safety]([link removed]). In 2017, the state legislature passed a law allowing guns on college and university campuses. In 2022, Georgia also passed permitless carry legislation. Georgia also [doesn’t require]([link removed].) private gun sellers to conduct background checks.

- The Biden administration has worked on numerous gun control measures, including a [recent effort]([link removed]) to require thousands more dealers to do background checks at gun shows or other places aside from brick-and-mortar stores. A Harris-Walz administration is widely expected to continue those efforts.

- Murphy warned that disgraced former President Trump — who’s associated with the far-right Project 2025 document that [includes policies to undermine gun control]([link removed]) — could stymie any breakthroughs. “We didn't make any progress with Trump. I mean, it was just all a show,” Murphy said, [referring to his own past talks]([link removed]) with the former president about gun control legislation. “Why would anybody want to go back to the days under Trump [when crime was spiraling]([link removed]), and we had a president in the White House who cared more about a company’s profit than the safety of our kids?”

Among developed countries, gun violence remains a [uniquely American problem]([link removed]) — and one that’s entirely preventable. But, as Murphy put it, “there's no saving the country from the gun lobby if the gun lobby wins the 2024 election.”

The ongoing civil war in Sudan is the largest humanitarian crisis in the world by the numbers, and it has received little of the world’s attention. Even Washington’s top diplomat to the North African country isn’t sure why.

“I’ve never been a part of a crisis of this scale that gets so little attention,” Special Envoy to Sudan Tom Perriello told [Pod Save The World on Wednesday]([link removed]), noting widespread sexual violence, crimes against humanity and reports of genocide since the war began in April 2023. [More than 10 million people]([link removed]) are internally displaced in Sudan and [15,000 have been killed]([link removed].) in the conflict.

There has been “almost total silence from the world community, and sure the racism of coverage of Africa … comes to mind, but we’ve had trouble even getting the African press to cover this. It doesn't seem to fit a neat narrative of good vs evil,” Perriello said.

Kamala Harris [held a rally]([link removed]) in New Hampshire on Wednesday, a state that a top Trump volunteer admitted is “[no longer a battleground.]([link removed])” The vibes among Democrats who attended were strong, people involved in the planning told What A Day, pointing out that Harris’ campaign has 17 field offices in the state while Republicans only have one. No no no; nice try, New Hampshire. This isn’t over until Election Day. We’re not taking a single state for granite (I’m so sorry I hate myself).

The Biden administration [accused Russia]([link removed]) of a sustained effort to meddle in the November presidential election, via state-run media and other online platforms to push disinformation. The White House condemned the actions, while the DOJ announced criminal charges targeting Russians involved. Stop me if you think you’ve [heard this one]([link removed]) before!

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba [resigned on Wednesday]([link removed]) in the country’s biggest administrative shakeup since Russia’s invasion in 2022. Ukrainian diplomat Andrii Sybiha is expected to take over, a person close to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office told What A Day.

Mark Robinson, a GOP candidate for governor in North Carolina, [is denying]([link removed]) that he was something of a porn aficionado back in the day, contrary to a local [(um, awkward-laughter-type unsettling) press report]([link removed]). His campaign called the article “Democrat activist fan-fiction,” as if that didn’t kinda sound like its own curious sub-genre of bodice-ripper romance novels? Whatever works for you, I guess!!

Democrats didn’t run for half of all partisan offices across the country in the 2022 midterms, over three times the rate of Republican no-shows, according to a [New York Times]([link removed]) analysis. Friendly reminder: Most of you are probably eligible to run for office and can play an active role in defending democracy. And you know who doesn’t sit on the sidelines? Far-right psychos ready to do harm on day one.

Tim Sheehy, who’s running to oust Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), used racist stereotypes about Native Americans during private fund-raisers last year, according to local outlet [Char-Koosta News]([link removed]). It’s worth noting that 6 percent of the state’s population is made up of Indigenous residents, and Montana is home to seven reservations and 12 tribes. Many Native Americans, like the rest of us, [weren’t surprised]([link removed]) about the Trump-endorsed candidate’s despicable actions.

What’s that you say… more Jon Lovett content? You got it. Our pal and Pod Save America co-host took a break from the Crooked family for a few weeks to make us proud (or, embarrassed, we’re not sure yet!) as a [cast member on reality show Survivor]([link removed]). “When Pod Save America listeners and Lovett or Leave It listeners discover that the reason I was gone for five weeks was to be on Survivor, they're gonna think that’s bananas,” he said. We’ve always thought you were bananas, Jon!

Tim Walz’s brother [let down the MAGA crowd]([link removed]) after saying that he had stories to tell that could presumably bring down his younger bro. So far, those stories include a damning scandal of… carsickness as a child. How could undecided voters ever vote for him now???

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) is [endorsing Kamala Harris]([link removed]) and said she’s voting for the veep over Donald Trump — proof that not all Republicans have lost touch with reality! In all seriousness, Liz, if you could also convince about 20,000 of your closest friends in Pennsylvania to vote the same way, then we’ll be all set.
