Will you send an urgent message to the UK government ahead of the fundraising summit on Monday so treatments and vaccines are affordable for all?

Hi John,
The race for a Covid-19 vaccine is on. On Monday the UK will be co-hosting a virtual summit to massively boost public research funding for a new Covid-19 vaccine by a whopping £7 billion. Already public money makes up a large amount of the investment going into finding treatments and a new vaccine, and £250 million of UK public money has been added to the pot. But there’s no guarantee that any vaccine developed from this money will be accessible and affordable to everyone around the world.

Will you send an urgent message to the UK government ahead of the summit on Monday
and ask them to put conditions on any public funding raised to ensure that treatments and vaccines that are developed are affordable for all?

You can also help make this ask even more public so the ministers attending the virtual summit can’t help but see our message.

If you use Twitter, can you send this tweet using your phone with a photo of yourself holding a sign saying #Covid19VaccineForAll?

Here's an example:

Over 13,000 of you have signed a petition to call for an affordable Covid-19 vaccine for all. Thank you! Yesterday, the government came under pressure from MPs too, and together with the demands of people across the UK and around the world who are calling for global solidarity in the face of this global pandemic, I’m sure we can win this.

Last week, the UK government joined 20 other governments in supporting a World Health Organisation announcement, pledging to work toward “equitable global access” of Covid-19 treatments and vaccines. It’s a welcome step but without concrete action, a profit-hungry pharmaceutical system will stand in the way of equal access for all and this pledge could just be empty words. Monday’s summit is an opportunity for our government to turn words into action.

Email the government today and ask them to push for conditions to be put on the public money raised at Monday’s global fundraising summit.

And if you’re on twitter, can you attach a picture of yourself with a hand-written sign that says #Covid19VaccineForAll to this tweet?

The way our pharmaceutical system works means that, even though large amounts of public money are poured into developing drugs, big pharmaceutical companies take over the development of treatments at later stages and can patent new treatments and vaccines. Without competition, big pharma can name their price. In a pandemic, this leaves the door open to massive profiteering which is completely unacceptable and will prevent us from combating this disease.

But there is a way our government can ensure that this doesn’t happen. Attaching conditions on all public funding to prevent big pharma patents could ensure that any vaccine developed is affordable, accessible and available to everyone in the world.

Tell the government to use their influence as co-host of the pledging summit on Monday to act on their words and really make sure that Covid-19 treatments and vaccines are affordable for everyone, everywhere.

------------------------------------------------------------

We are campaigning for the government to attach conditions on all UK funding for a Covid-19 vaccine so that big pharmaceuticals don’t charge extortionate prices, and leave millions of people around the world unable to access it.

Regular gifts give us the long-term stability to plan effective campaigns and the flexibility to respond to crises like these.
