The race for a Covid-19 vaccine is on. On Monday the UK will be co-hosting a virtual summit to massively boost public research funding for a new Covid-19 vaccine by a whopping £7 billion. Already public money makes up a large amount of the investment going into finding treatments and a new vaccine, and £250 million of UK public money has been added to the pot. But there’s no guarantee that any vaccine developed from this money will be accessible and affordable to everyone around the world.  

Will you send an urgent message to the UK government ahead of the summit on Monday and ask them to put conditions on any public funding raised to ensure that treatments and vaccines that are developed are affordable for all? 

Over 13,000 of you have signed a petition to call for an affordable Covid-19 vaccine for all. Thank you! Yesterday, the government came under pressure from MPs too, and together with the demands of people across the UK and around the world who are calling for global solidarity in the face of this global pandemic, I’m sure we can win this. 

Last week, the UK government joined 20 other governments in supporting a World Health Organisation announcement, pledging to work toward “equitable global access” of Covid-19 treatments and vaccines. It’s a welcome step but without concrete action, a profit-hungry pharmaceutical system will stand in the way of equal access for all and this pledge could just be empty words. Monday’s summit is an opportunity for our government to turn words into action. 

Email the government today and ask them to push for conditions to be put on the public money raised at Monday’s global fundraising summit.
