Dear John,

As climate change intensifies, so does our need to take strong action. Conserving and expanding our mature and old-growth forests is a ready solution that needs to be a part of our plan. These forests remove vast quantities of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store carbon in trees and soils.

In 2022, the U.S. Forest Service was instructed to conserve mature and old-growth trees and forests within our National Forests. The USFS drafted the National Old Growth Plan Amendment (NOGA) in response.

Unfortunately, the draft plan continues to allow commercial logging of old-growth trees in our National Forests. It wouldn’t provide any protection for mature forests that could become old-growth.

Currently, the USFS is accepting public comments to hear from people like you on the plan. We need to let the Forest Service know there is public support for a stronger plan amendment to protect mature and old-growth trees.

I am on the ground in Wisconsin and have seen firsthand the impact that commercial logging of old-growth and mature trees can have on forests like the Northwoods. We can and must do better. Your voice matters.

Thank you for letting the Forest Service know that folks are paying attention, and it can’t just be business as usual.

Sincerely,
