Dear John,
As climate change intensifies, so does our need to take strong action. Conserving and expanding our mature and old-growth forests is a ready solution that needs to be a part of our plan. These forests remove huge quantities of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store carbon in trees and soils. In 2022, the U.S. Forest Service was instructed to conserve mature and old-growth trees and forests within our National Forests. In response, the USFS drafted the National Old-Growth Plan Amendment (NOGA). Unfortunately, the draft plan continues to allow commercial logging of old-growth trees in our National Forests, and wouldn’t provide any protections for mature forests that could become old growth in the future. |
