Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Monday is one of my favorite days of the year – the first day of school for tens of thousands of young people in DC! Next week, our students will be stepping into their new classrooms, ready to embark on a new year of learning, growth, and opportunity. I know families across DC will be busy this weekend with final back to school preparations, making sure everything is in place for a smooth start to the school year.

Here are a few things you can do this weekend to ensure a strong start:

* Read the Back to School Guide [ [link removed] ]: a one-stop shop for all the information you need about attendance, transportation, and more.
* Set a bedtime routine: Start adjusting your child’s sleep schedule now to ensure they’re well-rested. A good night’s sleep is key to starting the year off right.
* Make sure you have a plan to get to and from school on time each day [ [link removed] ]: Remember that DC students can ride Metrobus, Metrorail, and DC Circulator for free with their Kids Ride Free [ [link removed] ] SmarTrip Card. New cards will be distributed at schools, and last year’s cards are good until September 30.
* Register for Afterschool in the City [ [link removed] ]: At this annual resource fair, your family can explore out-of-school time programs available during the upcoming year!

I want to thank our educators who go above and beyond to make our classrooms welcoming spaces for students to return to. I want to thank our team the Department of General Services, and all our facilities teams, for working long hours to make sure our buildings are ready for next week. And I want to thank our families for trusting our schools, being part of our school communities, and for working with us to make this a wonderful school year.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
