Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Monday is one of my favorite days of the year – the first day of school for tens of thousands of young people in DC! Next week, our students will be stepping into their new classrooms, ready to embark on a new year of learning, growth, and opportunity. I know families across DC will be busy this weekend with final back to school preparations, making sure everything is in place for a smooth start to the school year.

Here are a few things you can do this weekend to ensure a strong start:

  • Read the Back to School Guide: a one-stop shop for all the information you need about attendance, transportation, and more.
  • Set a bedtime routine: Start adjusting your child’s sleep schedule now to ensure they’re well-rested. A good night’s sleep is key to starting the year off right.
  • Make sure you have a plan to get to and from school on time each day: Remember that DC students can ride Metrobus, Metrorail, and DC Circulator for free with their Kids Ride Free SmarTrip Card. New cards will be distributed at schools, and last year’s cards are good until September 30.
  • Register for Afterschool in the City: At this annual resource fair, your family can explore out-of-school time programs available during the upcoming year!

I want to thank our educators who go above and beyond to make our classrooms welcoming spaces for students to return to. I want to thank our team the Department of General Services, and all our facilities teams, for working long hours to make sure our buildings are ready for next week. And I want to thank our families for trusting our schools, being part of our school communities, and for working with us to make this a wonderful school year.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
