One year ago today, Ecuador made history by becoming the first nation to legally put the health of the planet ahead of short-term economic interests by voting to protect Yasuní National Park ([link removed]) – the most biodiverse place on Earth – from fossil fuel extraction. This landmark decision was a victory for climate action, environmental justice, and Indigenous rights.
However, the Yasuní victory is now at risk, as the government has yet to fulfill its promise to decommission oil fields threatening this precious ecosystem. The Waorani people, guardians of Yasuní, continue to stand strong in their fight for their land, culture, and the planet's future.
At Amazon Watch, we remain steadfast in our commitment to support the Waorani and all Indigenous communities in their struggle for a fossil-free future, advocating for their rights and amplifying their voices on the global stage.
Together, we must ensure that Yasuní remains a symbol of hope and a testament to the power of collective action in addressing the climate crisis.
