At least 50 have died in protests sparked by the debt crisis

Hello friend,
There have been reports in the news ([link removed]) of widespread protests in Kenya. Last month violent clashes with police led to the deaths of 50 people.
And why have people been protesting? Because of unjust debt.
Proposals for tax hikes and austerity policies to pay down debts led to thousands taking to the streets in an effort to prevent these harsh economic policies being enforced. All while Western lenders are raking in massive profits.
Kenya is one of 54 countries facing unpayable debts, but we can do something to try and stop the crisis spiraling. Nine in ten of the debt contracts between private lenders and lower-income countries like Kenya, Ghana and Ethiopia are governed by UK law.
Because of this, the UK government could play a key role in creating a debt cancellation process.
Will you stand with allies in these countries and call for the UK government to commit to a new debt justice law? Add you name to the letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and let’s amplify the call for debt cancellation.

New loans from big development banks to the Kenyan government are being used to pay back greedy private lenders, with no material benefit for the people of Kenya. The government will spend less per person this year than it did in 2015.
The recent outrage over proposed tax hikes to pay back these loans forced the government to withdraw their proposals. But powerful lenders, the International Monetary Fund, are still demanding that Kenya raise taxes or cut public spending, in order to keep paying the debt.
Stand in solidarity with campaigners in Kenya and around the world calling for a new debt justice law – sign the letter from Ghanaian debt campaigner Bernard Anaba to the Prime Minister today.
Call for a new debt justice law ([link removed])
All of Kenya’s debts to Western private lenders are governed by UK law. A new debt justice law in the UK could deliver justice for millions of people living in countries in economic crisis like Kenya, Ghana and Ethiopia.
Together, we can make sure the government hears these calls for action on debt loud and clear.
In solidarity,
Wiz, Eva, Tim and everyone at Debt Justice
