Hello friend,
There have been reports in the news of widespread protests in Kenya. Last month violent clashes with police led to the deaths of 50 people.
And why have people been protesting? Because of unjust debt.
Proposals for tax hikes and austerity policies to pay down debts led to thousands taking to the streets in an effort to prevent these harsh economic policies being enforced. All while Western lenders are raking in massive profits.
Kenya is one of 54 countries facing unpayable debts, but we can do something to try and stop the crisis spiraling. Nine in ten of the debt contracts between private lenders and lower-income countries like Kenya, Ghana and Ethiopia are governed by UK law.
Because of this, the UK government could play a key role in creating a debt cancellation process.
