African Leadership Perspectives Series: A Conversation with H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria [[link removed]]

This series invites African public figures and former African heads of state to the Wilson Center to share their perspectives on Africa’s leadership role in the evolving global arena.
The series’ inaugural speaker, H.E Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria was elected to the office in 1999, leading Nigeria's return to civilian government after decades of military rule. During his two terms, he played a key role in the creation of the Africa Union (AU) and in the resolution of several political crises on the continent. Following the conclusion of his presidency in May 2007, he has built a profile as a respected African elder statesman. He has served in numerous leadership positions including as a special United Nations and AU envoy addressing some of Africa's most urgent problems.

Organized Crime & Violence in Mexico: Considerations for Future Nearshoring Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) [[link removed]]Tuesday, August 6 // 3:00 –4:00 pm (ET)
De-risking from China is moving manufacturing closer to the United States. Nearshoring is expected to produce opportunities for new investment and economic growth, but can this historic trend also help improve security conditions in Mexico? These concerns and others are addressed in a policy issue paper by Dr. Cecilia Farfán-Méndez, Researcher with the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation at UC San Diego, as well as in this panel. Considering that security is a top concern for moving operations to Mexico, this event will cover recent trends in organized crime and violence and offer recommendations for would-be nearshore focused investors and Mexican US policymakers.

Arab Barometer, the longest-standing and the largest repository of publicly available data on MENA citizens, recently conducted its eighth round of polling assessing attitudes toward women’s rights and gender equality. MaryClare Roche, PhD, Director of Technology and Innovation at Arab Barometer, will present the data and key findings on attitudes regarding female workforce participation, political leadership, and education, as well as gender roles in and out of the home.

Last year’s unprecedented US-ROK-Japan Trilateral Summit at Camp David heralded in a new age of expanded and enhanced cooperation. Since August 2023, the United States, South Korea, and Japan have stepped up strategic cooperation to strengthen the trilateral partnership at large, pushing forward new strategies for government-to-government engagement, military training exercises, and investments in trade and technology.
Join us to review the last year of US-ROK-Japan trilateral expanded relations—both what has been accomplished and what remains on the docket—and to discuss opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for the three countries.
