Nearly half of all cancer deaths in the U.S. are preventable — and smoking is a leading risk factor

A new study ([link removed]) by the American Cancer Society found that 44% of all cancer deaths among U.S. adults were attributable to potentially modifiable risk factors, with cigarette smoking taking the lead as one of the deadliest. The study also found that most cases and deaths were from lung cancer. On World Lung Cancer Day, Aug. 1, organizations across the country spread awareness about the risk factors attributed to this deadly disease and reflect on the role that tobacco continues to play in the consistently high rates of lung cancer cases and deaths.

While e-cigarette use prevalence has declined significantly since the heyday of JUUL – 10% of high school students reported using e-cigarettes in 2023 – e-cigarette use among young people remains a concern, with more than 1 in 4 current users vaping daily.
