[- Vice President Kamala Harris]([link removed]) in Atlanta, challenging Trump to actually show up for a debate.
VP Harris’ burgeoning campaign is shaking up the electoral college map… and putting the Sun Belt back in play.
- In the days after President Biden's dismal debate performance, polls showed him slipping dangerously behind in Sun Belt states crucial to his 2020 victory: Georgia, Nevada and Arizona. Without them, his narrow path to a second term seemed to lay exclusively through the northern “Blue Wall” states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. But just days after supplanting Biden, Harris is building momentum in places where Biden stumbled, and opening up new paths to winning in November.
- Harris has pulled narrowly ahead of Trump in the national polling average compiled by statistician [Nate Silver]([link removed]), notching 44.4 percent over Trump’s 44.2 percent. Crucially, she’s also picking up momentum in the states that will decide the electoral college. In particular, [new polls show her making gains]([link removed]) in Arizona, Georgia, New Mexico, and even North Carolina. The contest, of course, [remains very close]([link removed]). But the data suggests Harris has reset the race, thanks to a surge of Democratic enthusiasm and support from younger and more diverse voters, opening up multiple paths to victory and raising the possibility of recreating Biden’s successful 2020 map. The question now becomes how far she can ride this new momentum.
- The change was visible when Harris hit the stage for a boisterous rally Tuesday night at the Georgia State Convocation Hall in Atlanta, Georgia, backed by musicians Megan Thee Stallion and Quavo. The boisterous energy in the room was palpable. “I am very clear: The path to the White House runs right through this state,” Harris told the crowd. “You all helped us win in 2020, and we’re going to do it again in 2024.”

Harris’ team plans to stay “on offense” in all of these states, according to an internal campaign memo obtained by What A Day.
- “We continue to focus on the Blue Wall states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania — and the Sun Belt states of North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona and Nevada, where the Vice President’s advantages with young voters, Black voters, and Latino voters will be important to our multiple pathways to 270 electoral votes,” the memo states. “We intend to play offense in each of these states, and have the resources and campaign infrastructure to do so.”
- The Trump campaign isn’t sleeping on the Sun Belt, either. Trump and his veep pick, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), will hold a rally on Saturday at the same Atlanta venue that Harris visited Tuesday. Vance is also scheduled to make additional campaign stops in Nevada and Arizona.
Harris will need to maintain this momentum all summer and into the fall to keep Trump out of the White House.
It can be so frustrating to see what the world should look like, and feeling like each day it gets further and further out of reach. But, as Stacey Abrams would say, “One piece isn’t going to fix the whole puzzle but that doesn’t mean we can’t do something, somewhere, soon.“ On her new Crooked show Assembly Required with Stacey Abrams, Stacey is joined by organizing experts and progressive leaders to break down the biggest issues in politics right now, crowdsourcing solutions and sharing stories of action that will make you feel less alone and help motivate your friends and family to make a difference. You can listen to the trailer right now, wherever you get your podcasts. And be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss the first episode of Assembly Required with Stacy Abrams dropping August 15th.

Disgraced former President Trump falsely claimed that VP Harris recently “became” Black, and questioned her racial identity during a combative panel appearance at the annual National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago on Wednesday. “She was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden, she made a turn, and she went, she became a Black person,” Trump said of Harris, whose mother is Indian American and whose father is Black. Trump asked: “Is she Indian or is she Black?”
Trump's assertion is, of course, as bogus as it is offensive. Harris has long embraced both her Black and South Asian identity.
[The remarks came during a bizarre and hostile on-stage appearance]([link removed]) laden with [falsehoods]([link removed]). Trump proceeded to spar with reporters during what was originally intended, apparently, as a way for Trump to connect with voters of color. Trump attacked ABC News’ Rachel Scott for giving him a “rude introduction” in a “hostile manner,” and slammed her interview as “a disgrace.”
Trump’s remarks drew swift backlash. “Trump lobbed personal attacks and insults at Black journalists the same way he did throughout his presidency — while he failed Black families and left the entire country digging out of the ditch he left us in,” [the Harris campaign said in a statement]([link removed]).
Trump’s tirade follows a broader Republican effort to brand Harris a “DEI hire,” dismissing her background as a former prosecutor, California attorney general and senator to suggest her ascension to the presumptive Democratic nominee for president wasn’t based on merit.
Anthony Scaramucci, who served a famously short stint as Trump’s White House Director of Communications, [posted on social media]([link removed]): “Whoever told him to do this interview should be fired.” How many Scaramucci’s do we think the person responsible will last?
[The top political leader of Hamas was killed]([link removed]) in an airstrike during a visit to the capital of Iran on Wednesday, in an attack that Iran and the militant group both blamed on Israel, shortly after an Israeli airstrike killed a senior Hezbollah official in Lebanon. Israeli prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday Israel dealt “crushing blows” to both Hamas and Hezbollah.
[Harris is expected to make her VP pick by next Tuesday,]([link removed]) the day when her campaign said it plans to hold its first rally with the nominee in Philadelphia, PA, before setting off on a [series of battleground state campaign stops]([link removed]). [Harris insisted Tuesday]([link removed]) that she hadn’t made a final decision yet.
[Kari Lake, the TV-anchor-turned-raving-MAGA nutjob, won the Republican primary for Arizona Senate on Tuesday]([link removed]), setting the stage for a November faceoff against Rep. Reuben Gallego (D-AZ). Lake lost her 2022 gubernatorial bid to Gov. Katie Hobbs (D-AZ). The party of scorned losers continues to send their worst!
[Anti-abortion advocates and Republican lawmakers continue to try to hamstring]([link removed]) grassroots efforts to put reproductive rights referendums on the ballot after a string of losses in purple states, including Kansas, Michigan, Kentucky and Ohio since the fall of Roe v. Wade.

[A new study from the University of Birmingham found]([link removed]) that the bark on trees might be more effective at absorbing the greenhouse gas methane than previously thought. Guess those scientists were barking up the right tree, after all.
[Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell signaled further confidence that victory is in sight in the Fed’s battle against inflation,]([link removed]) suggesting a rate cut could come as soon as next month. Such a move would indicate the Fed is switching emphasis from fighting inflation to boosting employment.
[The United Automobile Workers endorsed Kamala Harris’s bid for president on Wednesday]([link removed]). The endorsement throws the union’s marked influence behind the vice president, with the potential to impact her standing in key battleground states.
