Canada’s future relies on the opportunities and support we provide to students today, friend – especially through this difficult time.
Many students or recent grads were preparing to start a summer job or new career in the weeks ahead, and are now concerned about how to make ends meet.
No one should have to choose between taking action against COVID-19 and their education, friend. As the Prime Minister said today, a sustainable economic recovery will require a strong workforce and good job opportunities for young people – and that means giving them the support they need to continue their studies and encouraging them to serve their communities.
That’s why today Justin Trudeau announced nearly $9 billion of comprehensive support to help students and recent grads, including:
- The new Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB): $1,250 per month from May through August for eligible students, and $1,750 for students with dependents or permanent disabilities
- The new Canada Student Service Grant (CSSG): Up to $5,000 for a student’s education in the fall for students who choose to work in national service positions and serve their community.
- Doubling the Canada Students Grants Program
- Broadening the eligibility for Student Financial Assistance
- Creating 76,000 jobs for young people in addition to the Canada Summer Jobs program, in sectors that need an extra hand right now or that are on the frontlines of this pandemic.
- Specific support for Indigenous students
- And much more...
Together, these measures will help ensure students and recent grads have the support they need to continue their studies, or to get the experience they were counting on to start their careers.
