People are feeling the impacts of extreme heat and birds are too. As our climate continues to change songbirds like the American Goldfinch and seabirds like the Common Murre are suffering dire consequences. In fact, eight years ago a grim event unfolded along the Alaskan coast. Tens of thousands of Common Murres were found lifeless. This was the result of a prolonged marine heat wave known as, ‘the blob’, which starved the ecosystem’s food supply, leading to the largest known die-off of a single bird species ever. Scientists estimate that 1 million Common Murres died during this mass mortality event—a stark reminder of the urgent need for action.
Catastrophes like this don’t have to happen, but we’re seeing them occur more and more amid record heat waves. We need your help to prevent further losses. Will you start your annual donation today? Our science powers the best path forward to help more birds survive at this critical time. Through advocacy and hands-on conservation action to maintain and protect resilient landscapes and seascapes across the nation, we’re pushing for the large-scale change it will take to ease habitat loss and help reverse the climate crisis. With your support, we plan to maintain current carbon storage while restoring natural habitats to pull more carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, contributing to at least 30 billion tons of carbon in natural areas such as forests, wetlands, and grasslands. These efforts will provide critical habitat for birds, help mitigate the impacts of climate change, and contribute to the health of our planet.
