People are feeling the impacts of extreme heat and birds are too. As our climate continues to change songbirds like the American Goldfinch and seabirds like the Common Murre are suffering dire consequences. In fact, eight years ago a grim event unfolded along the Alaskan coast. Tens of thousands of Common Murres were found lifeless. This was the result of a prolonged marine heat wave known as, ‘the blob’, which starved the ecosystem’s food supply, leading to
the largest known die-off of a single bird species ever. Scientists estimate that 1 million Common Murres died during this mass mortality event—a stark reminder of the urgent need for action.
Catastrophes like this don’t have to happen, but we’re seeing them occur more and more amid record heat waves. We need your help to prevent further losses. Will you start your annual donation today? Thanks to a group of generous donors, your first gift will be matched, up to $50,000, to protect birds and the places they need.
