[- Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) slamming]([link removed]) auto emissions regulations, which she apparently thinks will send us back to horse and buggy days.

Disgraced former President Trump and the GOP are gambling that their ridiculously vague party platform will make voters forget everything they’ve done to roll back reproductive rights.

- The 2024 Republican National Committee’s [new party platform is causing heartburn]([link removed]) among some GOP veterans, because for the first time in four decades, the document makes no mention of a national abortion ban. Instead, the file reads as if Trump wrote it on his phone, using his Twitter-thumbs, at four in the morning, [after downing a Panera Charged Lemonade]([link removed]). The document sets ludicrous goals, like “END INFLATION,” and, “PREVENT WORLD WAR THREE.” It also says the party will oppose "Late Term Abortion,” without specifying what, exactly, that means. Some longtime anti-choice Republicans were dismayed by that vagueness about how, exactly, the party plans to take away people’s control over their own bodies, including former Vice President Mike Pence, who expressed “profound disappointment.”

- But reproductive rights advocates say this hardly amounts to a real shift for Trump and the GOP. After all, conservative Supreme Court justices [repealed Roe v. Wade]([link removed]) in 2022, despite calling it [“settled as precedent” in confirmation hearings]([link removed]). “Unless Trump and his allies are planning to overturn the 21 state abortion bans they’re responsible for, this platform 'change' means nothing about the policies this party will pursue,” Jenny Lawson, the Planned Parenthood Votes executive director, said in a statement to What A Day. “The GOP’s platform is as untrustworthy as the presidential candidate they’re backing.”

- The phrase “Late Term Abortion” itself is totally vague. The term “has no medical meaning,“ Shefali Luthra, a reproductive health reporter for The 19th News, [told Wednesday's What A Day podcast]([link removed]). When used by Republicans, Luthra added, this phrase can be “slippery;” to one Republican it could mean an abortion at 20 weeks, and to another, it might mean 12 weeks.

There’s another item in the platform that’s easy to miss, but which sends an important signal to anti-choice groups.

- The platform’s reference to the 14th amendment, which provides equal protection under the law, is more insidious, Luthra pointed out. The use of this phrase is “a real telegraph to abortion opponents,” who have latched onto the amendment as a subversive vehicle to potentially ban abortion nationwide — or perhaps even IVF, because of a theory called “fetal personhood” that could be used to block abortion at all stages of pregnancy.

Luthra told What A Day: “I heard a surprising amount of enthusiasm from some abortion opponents who pointed to this 14th amendment phrasing and said, ‘this is the most important thing.’”

If you haven’t read Justice Sotomayor's dissenting opinion in the Supreme Courts decision to grant Trump absolute immunity, here’s a quote that stood out: “In every use of official power, the President is now a king above the law”. Reading that, it's clear that we are entering an unprecedented era of politics. If you’re looking for answers on the decisions made this term and how they’ll impact everything from the election to your everyday life, Strict Scrutiny just released an episode recapping the entire term to give you all the in depth analysis you need to make sense of what happened and what comes next. [Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)]([link removed]) said Biden must “decide if he’s going to run,” which turned heads because… Biden insists he has decided to run. Yeesh, this is getting awkward.

George Clooney was even more blunt, writing [in the New York Times]([link removed]) that when he saw Biden at a recent fundraiser, it “was not the Joe ‘big F-ing deal’ Biden of 2010.” Oof! The White House retorted that Biden stayed at the fundraiser three hours longer than Clooney did, implying Biden has more stamina. So, okay, now the White House is beefing with George Clooney. Things are going great!

Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is privately signaling to donors that he’s open to dumping Biden from the ticket, even while publicly insisting he’s “for Joe,” [according to Axios]([link removed]). Meanwhile, [Axios also reported]([link removed]) that a trio of Democratic Senators has told colleagues they don’t think Biden can win: Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Jon Tester (D-MT).

[Sen. Peter Welch (D-VT) became]([link removed]) the first sitting Democratic senator to openly call for Biden to step aside on Wednesday evening in a Washington Post OpEd.

New York state is emerging as an epicenter of Biden’s Democratic defections. Hours after Rep. Pat Ryan (D-NY) [said]([link removed]) Biden “is no longer the best candidate to defeat Trump,” former House Democrat and Lt. Gov. of New York Antonio Delgado [also called]([link removed]) for the president to step aside. The defections reflect growing fears New York state [could be in play]([link removed]).

[George Stephanopolous apologized]([link removed]) after the ABC News host was caught on tape telling a stranger he didn’t think Biden “can serve four more years” — just days after his one-on-one interview with the president. Foot, meet mouth.

[Trump, meanwhile, is setting his sights on Vice President Kamala Harris]([link removed]). The 45th president has reworked his stump speech to target the veep as [Harris’ poll numbers buoy]([link removed]) and Biden tries to shush his haters.

An initial [batch of F16 jet fighters are being shipped to Ukraine]([link removed]), according to the U.S. and its allies, just a day after President Biden pledged at the NATO summit to provide further support for the country in its war against Russia.

[Rep. Anna Paulina Luna’s (R-FL) inherent contempt resolution]([link removed]) against Attorney General Merrick Garland is moving forward after multiple attempts by House Republican leadership and Democrats to squash the measure. The full House will now have to vote on it.

Republicans on the House Oversight Committee [subpoenaed three White House officials]([link removed]) to sit for depositions focused on Biden’s fitness for office. Cruel, cruel summer indeed.

[Donna Osborne, a 75-year-old great-grandmother]([link removed]) who provides transportation to the Amish for a living, won a $5 million scratch-off lottery prize, shortly after completing radiation treatment for breast cancer. She plans to keep working, but for now, she says: “I think I’ll invest some of the prize, sure, but then go to Alaska!”
