Dear John,

On this day in 1969, the Stonewall Rebellion began. The Stonewall Inn had already been raided once that week, and at least once a month leading up to June 28th, but this night was different. Patrons resisted invasive body searches, and when a butch lesbian fought back against the police and called on the crowd to "do something," the spark of what we now celebrate as Pride was ignited. In honor of all that was done for Queer liberation, I wanted to share some Queer films, resources for your Pride weekend, and highlight the lives of Queer Palestinians. Happy Pride! Welcome to the front lines of AIDS activism. A series of surprise attacks on local officials to expose political corruption surrounding the AIDS epidemic are being run by a band of unlikely warriors: two drag queens, an HIV-positive man with tiny gemstones dotting his bald head, and his HIV-positive sister.

Queer Film Pick: Pride (2014)
Set in the summer of 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power, and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support.

Queer Palestinians
Pride couldn’t possibly be talked about without also celebrating and uplifting the lives of Queer Palestinians. Queering the Map shows so many beautiful, and simultaneously tragic, stories from Queer Palestinians. Give some of them a read, it is sure to fill your heart. [link removed]

Youth and AIDS Project Minnesota is hosting a Trans and Gender non-conforming movie series through July! Enjoy movies or TV episodes, discussions, treats and giveaways every other Monday.

Somali Independence Day
Monday July 1st is Somali Independence Day! Celebrate by attending this free afternoon of poetry, songs, dancing, and films. It’ll kick off at noon and then at 2pm there will be a screening of the critically acclaimed film “A Stray.”

Black Garnet Books is passing the torch
The owner of Minneapolis’ beloved Black Garnet Books is looking to pass the torch. Dionne says while she’s looking to move on to pursue her love of writing, she wants to pass Black Garnet Books off to another person who is just as passionate about providing BIPOC literature to the community.
