Dear John,
On this day in 1969, the Stonewall Rebellion began. The Stonewall Inn had already been raided once that week, and at least once a month leading up to June 28th, but this night was different. Patrons resisted invasive body searches, and when a butch lesbian fought back against the police and called on the crowd to "do something," the spark of what we now celebrate as Pride was ignited. In honor of all that was done for Queer liberation, I wanted to share some Queer films, resources for your Pride weekend, and highlight the lives of Queer Palestinians. Happy Pride! I hope you experience so much joy this weekend. Let’s dive in.
Here’s what we’re reading, watching, and listening to this week: 1. Kim's workers WINCongratulations to the workers at Kim’s who won their union election! We’re so excited for them as they take this historic step for restaurant workers in Minnesota, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact of their organizing. 2. People's Pride guidesIt’s finally Pride weekend, Minneapolis! You can find all the info you need on Instagram about People's Pride accessibility, activities, and everything in between. 3. Queer Film Pick: My Life in PinkLudovic is waiting for a miracle. With six-year-old certainty, she believes she was meant to be a little girl. But where she expects the miraculous, Ludo finds only rejection, isolation and guilt – as the intense reactions of family, friends, and neighbors strip away every innocent lace and bauble. As suburban prejudices close around them, family loves and loyalties are tested. This unique film experience delivers magic of the rarest sort through a story of difference, rejection, and childlike faith in miracles. 4. Queer Film Pick: Chocolate BabiesWelcome to the front lines of AIDS activism. A series of surprise attacks on local officials to expose political corruption surrounding the AIDS epidemic are being run by a band of unlikely warriors: two drag queens, an HIV-positive man with tiny gemstones dotting his bald head, and his HIV-positive sister. 5. Queer Film Pick: Pride (2014)Set in the summer of 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power, and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support. 6. Queer PalestiniansPride couldn’t possibly be talked about without also celebrating and uplifting the lives of Queer Palestinians. Queering the Map shows so many beautiful, and simultaneously tragic, stories from Queer Palestinians. Give some of them a read, share them with friends or on social media, and carry them with you this weekend. 7. YAP MN movie nightsYouth and AIDS Project Minnesota is hosting a Trans and Gender non-conforming movie series through July! Enjoy movies or TV episodes, discussions, treats and giveaways every other Monday. 8. Somali Independence DayMonday July 1st is Somali Independence Day! Celebrate by attending this free afternoon at the MIA for poetry, songs, dancing, and films. It’ll kick off at noon and then at 2pm there will be a screening of the critically acclaimed film “A Stray.” 9. Black Garnet Books is looking to pass the torchThe owner of Minneapolis’ beloved Black Garnet Books is looking to pass the torch. Dionne says while she’s looking to move on to pursue her love of writing, she wants to pass Black Garnet Books off to another person who is just as passionate about providing BIPOC literature to the community. 10. The Wedge live cat tourO.M.G., I had no idea The Wedge neighborhood hosted a CAT TOUR! This might be the most adorable thing I have ever seen. And that’s a wrap! Send us what you’re reading, watching and listening to. Until next time, Ayanna Lee (they/she) |
