Wild Salmon Center - Action Alert - June 2024
BREAKING: We Just Got a Big Step Closer to Protecting 28 Million Acres in Alaska
Dear John,
This is a great day for Alaska fish, wildlife, and public lands! Today, the federal Bureau of Land Management took a big step toward finalizing protections for 28 million acres of public lands across Alaska, safeguarding them from extractive industrial development . Now, we have 30 days to tell federal land managers to finish the job.

From Bristol Bay to the Yukon-Kuskokwim region, these lands provide subsistence resources for over 100 Alaska Native communities. They nourish incredible fish and wildlife biodiversity, and serve as massive carbon sinks. In 2021, a “midnight decision” by the Trump Administration threatened to repurpose these long-protected lands for extractive industrial development. Now, we’re on the precipice of turning that decision around.
The Biden Administration needs to hear that Alaskans and conservation allies everywhere support this final decision and want these public lands kept intact —so they can continue to support all five species of Pacific salmon, three of North America’s largest caribou herds, abundant moose populations, and a vast number of migratory bird species.

These BLM lands are some the largest intact landscapes left in the country. Protecting them from industrial development will help buffer vulnerable fish and wildlife populations from the effects of climate change—and provide future food security for Alaska Native Tribes and communities. But we need your help to keep federal land managers moving in the right direction.
We have 30 days to take action. Can you speak up now—and help us get these critical land protections across the finish line?
Sincerely,
Emily Anderson
