Welcome to the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s [[link removed]] June update. In this newsletter, you’ll find highlights from across our areas of work, as well as the latest news about Trust Conference 2024. Registrations are now open for Trust Conference 2024

Join us on 22-23 October at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in London to explore some of the biggest challenges facing society – from surging threats to media freedom to the rapidly developing impact of AI. Tickets are free, and you are now warmly invited to apply for your place [[link removed]].

We’re delighted to be joined by world-leading experts including Nobel Laureate, Co-founder and CEO of Rappler, Maria Ressa, and award-winning journalist and author, Kara Swisher. Maria and Kara will join other renowned experts on day one, which, this year, explores the multifaceted challenges to global democracy as AI becomes increasingly integrated into our digital landscape. We will examine how media professionals and newsrooms can ensure the core values of good journalism remain intact as they enter a new phase of radical transformation.

Human Rights

The recent European Parliament elections have led to gains for far-right parties.

This has raised fears among human rights advocates that a right-leaning parliament could stall or even roll back progress on issues including climate change, migration and LGBTQ+ equality.

Media Freedom

The Reuters Institute’s 2024 Digital News Report, made possible by core funding from the Foundation, reveals new findings about online news consumption based on a survey of almost 100,000 people in 47 countries, representing the views of more than half the world’s population.

This year's report contains key findings such as:

Inclusive Economies

In an exclusive opinion article for our digital news platform Context, former President of Malawi, Joyce Banda, suggests that some western governments are unwilling to make financial commitments to help those most affected by climate change.

“The Paris Agreement cannot be delivered without the finance to back it up - and if the G7 doesn’t move on finance, nobody else will. A G7 deal must begin with the payment of pledges to help countries like Malawi to rebuild from climate disasters.”
