      Human Rights

Image of EU Parliament results that show a significant gain for far-right parties.

The recent European Parliament elections have led to gains for far-right parties.

This has raised fears among human rights advocates that a right-leaning parliament could stall or even roll back progress on issues including climate change, migration and LGBTQ+ equality.

In this piece from our digital news platform Context, has examined how the election results could impact European Union action on human rights.

The Reuters Institute’s 2024 Digital News Report, made possible by core funding from the Foundation, reveals new findings about online news consumption based on a survey of almost 100,000 people in 47 countries, representing the views of more than half the world’s population.

This year's report contains key findings such as:

      • An increasing focus on partisan commentators, influencers, and young news creators
      • Increasing concern about what is real and what is fake on the internet
      • Widespread suspicion about how AI might be used, especially for ‘hard’ news stories such as politics and war

Image of Dr. Joyce Banda, former President of Malawi

In an exclusive opinion article for our digital news platform Context, former President of Malawi, Joyce Banda, suggests that some western governments are unwilling to make financial commitments to help those most affected by climate change.

“The Paris Agreement cannot be delivered without the finance to back it up - and if the G7 doesn’t move on finance, nobody else will. A G7 deal must begin with the payment of pledges to help countries like Malawi to rebuild from climate disasters.”

--Dr. Joyce Banda, former President of Malawi
