Baking is love.

For my family, it's how we show people we love them. It is a labor of love. Decades ago, I learned just how many families feel the same way, when we opened our first Porto's Bakery & Café just around the corner from CHLA.

I didn't know we were by a children's hospital back then, but I soon learned the stories of the patients, doctors and nurses who visited the bakery. Families celebrating a homecoming after a difficult time, or a mom bringing something yummy to put a much-needed smile on her child's face while they were in the hospital.

Every story-every single one-was about love. In those early days, I didn't know how much our bakery would become part of CHLA, connected to the hundreds of thousands of patients and caregivers who pass through their-and our-doors. But I'm so glad we are still deeply connected, nearly fifty years later.
