Giona Picheco is a veteran of the United States Navy, where she spent six years in the submarine service. She became politically active after a discriminatory ban was put into place against transgender people serving openly in the military. Being singled out, and seeing so many other disadvantaged communities targeted by hate and ignorance, she decided to get involved in local advocacy once her service was completed.

New Politics supports outstanding military veterans and national service leaders, alumni of programs like AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps, to step up and serve our country again, this time through politics. We were proud to be behind the movement of veterans who ran for office for the first time in 2018, and we have big plans to grow into the future.
