This week, TAC is pleased to release "Our Stories Matter: Experiences with the State Hospital System [link removed]
," a report in which we delved beyond statistics to share the compelling stories of family members and an individual with lived experience in the state hospital system. These stories shed light on the urgent need for more state hospital beds, as also evidenced in our most recent comprehensive survey of state hospital beds, Prevention Over Punishment [link removed]
[link removed] shows that the quality of care within the system requires immediate attention and improvement, while at the same time it is crucially important to maintain the few state hospitals that remain. By providing high-quality, effective care before individuals deteriorate to the point of encountering the criminal legal system, we can prevent the criminalization of mental illness.
