This week, TAC released "Our Stories Matter: Experiences with the State Hospital System," a new report in which we delved beyond statistics to share the compelling stories of family members and an individual with lived experience in the state hospital system. These personal stories shed light on the urgent need for more state hospital beds, which was also a key finding of our most recent comprehensive survey of state hospital beds, Prevention Over Punishment.

Our Stories Matter further shows that quality of care within the system requires immediate attention and improvement, while it is equally as important to maintain the few state hospitals that remain.

We believe that by providing high-quality, effective care before individuals deteriorate to the point of encountering the criminal legal system, we can prevent the criminalization of mental illness.
