Pride Month is here, and we're excited to share a roundup of important information concerning the mental health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people. At AFSP, we believe that everyone has a role to play in preventing suicide among LGBTQ people. Here are just a few updates and resources to help you learn more and join us in our mission to save lives:
- Get familiar with [AFSP's LGBTQ Resource Guide]([link removed]), which includes key information on LGBTQ crisis and support services, LGBTQ suicide research, and how to take proactive measures to prevent suicide among LGBTQ people
- Read our powerful new Real Stories blog by author Taylor Ryan, ["As a Queer Person and Suicide Loss Survivor, I've Learned There's Strength in Vulnerability"]([link removed])
- The Biden-Harris administration has strengthened health coverage protections for LGBTQ+ individuals. On April 26, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a final rule under Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that includes important protections for LGTBQI+ people and other marginalized communities against discrimination in health care. The final rule ensures that health programs or activities that receive federal funds cannot discriminate based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or sex assigned at birth. The rule also strengthens protections for individuals who are pregnant, have disabilities, or who don’t speak English as their primary language.
- Visit our [LGBTQ Individuals & Populations page]([link removed]) to learn more about AFSP's position on policies affecting LGBTQ people
- Participate in or arrange a presentation of [Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention in the LGBTQ Community]([link removed]) and learn about the unique considerations surrounding suicide in the LGBTQ community, including the latest research on LGBTQ suicide prevention, how to recognize suicide risk factors and warning signs, crisis resources and services, and what communities can do to support LGBTQ people
Every effort toward LGBTQ suicide prevention counts, no matter how big or small. Today, we encourage you to choose just one action –– whether it's reading Taylor Ryan's blog or sharing our LGBTQ Resource Guide with your community, every show of support makes a difference.
