DearFriend --
Every year, ICAN exposes the absurd amounts of money the 9 nuclear armed states spend on their arsenals ($82.9 billion last year). These numbers are not just a strong media hook, or a talking point for world leaders who want to make the case for better uses for this money - such as climate or education. They're also a call to action, or better yet a?Global Week of Action on Nuclear Spending <[link removed]>!??
Our preparations for this year's week of action generated some exciting ideas and commitments from our partners around the world, but we also we also heard concerns about the June timing. We want this week to be as big and impactful as it can be. That is why, while we will still be releasing ICAN's yearly global nuclear weapons spending report on 17 June, we are?postponing the Week of Action until September 16-22.
<[link removed]>Go to the Week of Action hub <[link removed]>Why these new dates? Because on 22-23 September, world leaders and civil society will gather in New York for the midway point review of progress on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and one critical question is likely to come up: "how will we pay for these efforts?"?We think we can answer that question for them: Use the?billions that get wasted on nuclear weapons every year!?
We also think these dates could work well for local actions outside New York, as this is the time of year when countries are starting to have conversations about their 2025 budgets and university students are getting back to school (and could talk about their institutions' financial ties with weapons producers), among other opportunities.?
ICAN will still release its annual report on global nuclear weapons spending on 17 June, and we will be sending you an update, so keep an eye on your inbox.?
This report will kick off a global brainstorm on what we could do with the money instead. It's a chance to invite people to join us in imagining a billion better uses for this money, opening the door for them to join the week of action in September.
We hope you will join us for the week of action (if you haven't already). And if you would like to get more involved in organising actions or spreading the word, please check out our week of action facts and tools:
