This week is the 50th EMS Week,
and we’re glad to be a part of it!
This year marks the 50th anniversary of EMS Week ([link removed]) , a significant milestone in recognizing and celebrating the dedicated professionals who serve on the front lines of emergency medical services. Since its inception by President Gerald Ford in 1974, EMS Week has been a vital time to honor the commitment and bravery of paramedics, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), and other EMS personnel who provide critical care during emergencies.
EMS workers are often the first to arrive at the scene of accidents, medical crises, and natural disasters, where their expertise and swift actions can mean the difference between life and death. This week-long celebration serves as a reminder of their indispensable role in maintaining public health and safety.
We want to thank all of the EMS Professionals who are a part
of the STOP THE BLEED® campaign.
We have thousands of EMS Professionals providing
STOP THE BLEED® training to members of their community and spreading the word about the importance of this campaign.
We couldn’t do it without you!
Each year STOP THE BLEED® Day falls on the Thursday of EMS Week, which means we are THREE DAYS OUT from this year’s STOP THE BLEED® Day on May 23, 2024!
If you are an EMS Professional involved in the STOP THE BLEED® campaign, make sure to #RaiseYourHand ([link removed]) across your social media platforms this Thursday and let us know why STOP THE BLEED® is important to you!

Illinois
Law Enforcement Instructor
I have been in EMS and law enforcement since 1983, first as an Army medic and progressing through the process to becoming a paramedic in 1997. In 1996 I became a police officer and in 2003 I earned a position on my department's Emergency Response Team. I was the team's medic and I was introduced to TCCC through a cooperative training program between the US Navy and the state of Illinois' Law Enforcement Alarm System. (continued)
(continued) Once I completed that training I became an Instructor and that is where I was introduced to STOP THE BLEED®. In 2016 I introduced STOP THE BLEED® to my 240 member police department and trained 95% of the officers from the chief on down. In the next 2-3 years through a cooperative agreement with a local trauma center the training was provided to many other police officers and sheriff's deputies. Since I retired from the police department in 2017 I have remained involved in the training of law enforcement, citizens and various other public safety professionals at all levels. As an EMS Instructor at a local community college, I present STOP THE BLEED® training to my EMT students during our Basic and Advanced EMT courses. In 2020 I was invited to join a police training center to provide STOP THE BLEED® training to police cadets that trains officers from all over the state of Illinois. I want to get this training out to as many people as possible and if it were in my power to do so,
STOP THE BLEED® would be as common as CPR training.
Training is at the heart of the STOP THE BLEED® campaign and STOP THE BLEED® Instructors are the ones that make the heart beat! The Instructor Spotlight shines a bright light on individuals engaging their communities about STOP THE BLEED®.

I am passionate about STOP THE BLEED® because I have been a ER/ ICU/ Trauma Register Nurse for over 40 years and witnessed numerous individuals succumb to severe blood loss as a result of a gunshot wound or other traumatic events. I have also witnessed numerous individuals survive because a tourniquet was applied by law enforcement, EMS and even community members who were trained in this life saving skill learned from a STOP THE BLEED® training they attended. In addition, I have personally trained over 4,000 people. I also was instrumental in completing the application for STOP THE BLEED® training grant and was awarded it on behalf of Quinnipiac University.
