LaCava's Column DE ANZA NATURAL AMENDMENT PASSES My vision for the De Anza corner of Mission Bay is to retain existing recreation uses, restore at least a fraction of its historic wetlands, and ensure resiliency and clean water. On Tuesday, my council colleagues agreed, and we have set the standard for urban climate adaptation. As an observer when the city first started working on this plan in 2016, I watched and listened as stakeholders, organizations, and hundreds of residents participated in multiple workshops and public hearings. Upon my election as councilmember and appointed as Chair of the City’s Environment Committee, I am proud to have led in modernizing the Mission Bay Master Plan for the future of De Anza. Countless conversations, refinements, and gaining the input of state and federal resource agencies, helped shape the adopted amendments. Tuesday's action is not the last step, just the first. As we move forward toward a shovel-ready project there will be more hearings, and the public and stakeholders will continue to have input as we move from vision to implementation. Whether you love this corner of Mission Bay for golf, tennis, camping, bird watching, youth sports, pickleball, bike riding, or boating, all existing uses will continue in their current configuration and operations until we are ready to break ground. Mission Bay Park Master Plan CHARGING CARS AND CHANGING MINDSETS Our city must reduce its carbon footprint, which is why I helped lead in expanding accessibility to electric vehicle charging stations. This agreement will install electric vehicle charging stations at city parks, recreation centers, and libraries in every council district. Gaining city council support was another important step in driving our Climate Action Plan goals forward. View Item Resolution Here SAN DIEGO CHIEF OF POLICE CONFIRMED Congratulations to our newly appointed Chief Scott Wahl. After a robust search process, we found the right choice to assume command as Chief David Nisleit retires. Successful leadership fosters a community with safety, trust, accountability, transparency, and service for all San Diegans, and Chief Wahl promises to uphold these values. I look forward to partnering with him in protecting the public’s safety in every neighborhood. View Item Resolution Here FY 2025 MAY BUDGET REVISION IS HERE Advocacy makes a difference, and there is no better demonstration of this than Mayor Gloria’s May revision to the proposed budget, restoring priority programs like the SDPD Juvenile Services Team. The community spoke, the council listened, and Mayor Gloria responded by restoring programs that protect neighborhoods, prevent evictions, and act on our homelessness crisis. We must continue to focus on our limited resources, budgeting where they will do the most good and limiting difficult budget cuts where they will do the least harm. May Revision Report #TEAMLACAVA IN THE DISTRICT #TeamLaCava picked up their scrapers and buckets to help Pacific Beach Town Council and their Graffiti Busters to clean up PB. Thanks to the good work of volunteers (including Mayor Gloria!), we removed graffiti and stickers from traffic signals, sidewalks, utility boxes, and signs throughout the community. Results? Over 1,100 spots cleaned! Follow me on social media to stay up to date!
