My vision for the De Anza corner of Mission Bay is to retain existing recreation uses, restore at least a fraction of its historic wetlands, and ensure resiliency and clean water. On Tuesday, my council colleagues agreed, and we have set the standard for urban climate adaptation.
As an observer when the city first started working on this plan in 2016, I watched and listened as stakeholders, organizations, and hundreds of residents participated in multiple workshops and public hearings. Upon my election as councilmember and appointed as Chair of the City’s Environment Committee, I am proud to have led in modernizing the Mission Bay Master Plan for the future of De Anza. Countless conversations, refinements, and gaining the input of state and federal resource agencies, helped shape the adopted amendments.
Tuesday's action is not the last step, just the first. As we move forward toward a shovel-ready project there will be more hearings, and the public and stakeholders will continue to have input as we move from vision to implementation.
Whether you love this corner of Mission Bay for golf, tennis, camping, bird watching, youth sports, pickleball, bike riding, or boating, all existing uses will continue in their current configuration and operations until we are ready to break ground.
