Dear John,
A key factor in the decline in global freedom is the breakdown or deliberate destruction of representative rule—the systems that hold governments accountable to the people through free and fair elections. Once those systems have been dismantled by rigged elections, coups, or power grabs, it can be difficult to reconstruct them.
Difficult, but not impossible. Freedom House’s Matthew Barak explains how The Gambia and Fiji offer important lessons in how to rebuild democratic institutions, lessons that could be relevant to other countries in similar circumstances.

In a Democracy, No One Is Above the Law
Former US president Donald Trump is facing criminal charges in four separate federal and state cases. While such cases are always politically controversial, and carry risks, that has not stopped independent justice systems in many of the world’s freest countries from pursuing and managing cases credibly. Democracies can emerge stronger from such events by demonstrating to citizens that the rule of law applies to everyone.

Saudi Government Must Lift Loujain al-Hathloul Travel Ban
Loujain al-Hathloul, one of Saudi Arabia’s most celebrated advocates for women’s rights, was arrested, tortured and imprisoned for over 1,000 days for her activism before being conditionally released from prison in 2021. Since then she has been under an arbitrary travel ban.
