Dear John,
A key factor in the decline in global freedom is the breakdown or deliberate destruction of representative rule—the systems that hold governments accountable to the people through free and fair elections. Once those systems have been dismantled by rigged elections, coups, or power grabs, it can be difficult to reconstruct them.
Difficult, but not impossible. Freedom House’s Matthew Barak explains how The Gambia and Fiji offer important lessons in how to rebuild democratic institutions, lessons that could be relevant to other countries in similar circumstances.
