Dear Reader,
Today, I write to you with a pressing concern regarding a new threat to transparency in campaign finance.
"Not the rich more than the poor."- Thomas Jefferson. These words resonate deeply as we confront a proposal that could undermine the very foundation of transparency in our electoral processes.
FEC Commissioner Allen Dickerson has proposed a significant alteration to the commission's disclosure requirements. He urged the commission to explore measures that would streamline the process for political groups to withhold donor information in their public filings. While it is currently possible for individuals to have their personal information kept out of the public data resources if they face threats, Dickerson’s proposal would make it far easier for individuals to “opt out” of the disclosure process.
If accepted, this new procedure could mark a significant shift in how the FEC handles transparency in political contributions.
If Commissioner Dickerson's proposal is approved, it could significantly undermine the ability for the general public to see who is influencing their elected officials and undermine the integrity of the electoral and policymaking process.
Campaign finance disclosure is not just about compliance. By embracing transparency as a guiding principle, we can build a stronger democracy for future generations.
But we cannot achieve this alone. We need your support to continue our work in advocating for transparency and accountability in government. Your donation to OpenSecrets will ensure that we can fight against threats to transparency like the one we face today.
