FEC Commissioner Allen Dickerson has proposed a significant alteration to the commission's disclosure requirements. He urged the commission to explore measures that would streamline the process for political groups to withhold donor information in their public filings. While it is currently possible for individuals to have their personal information kept out of the public data resources if they face threats, Dickerson’s proposal would make it far easier for individuals to “opt out” of the disclosure process.
If accepted, this new procedure could mark a significant shift in how the FEC handles transparency in political contributions.
If Commissioner Dickerson's proposal is approved, it could significantly undermine the ability for the general public to see who is influencing their elected officials and undermine the integrity of the electoral and policymaking process.
