How many people in the US get colorectal cancer?

Colorectal cancer is the nation’s fourth most common cancer, as well as the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths. [Recent data shows]([link removed]) that while rates have fallen since 2000, the drop is uneven among age groups; people younger than 64 are being diagnosed with the disease at an increasingly higher rate.

-

US colorectal cancer cases peaked in 2003 at just under 154,000. They dropped to 139,000 in 2012 before increasing to 146,000 in 2019.

-

While more people are being diagnosed with colon cancer as the nation’s population grows, both the rates of new cancers and death rates per 100,000 people are falling. In 2003, the nation had 52.5 new cases per 100,000 people. By 2020, there were 33.6. There were 19.1 deaths per 100,000 in 2003, and by 2020, the rate had dropped to 12.6.

-

In 2019, non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native men had the highest rate of new colorectal cancer cases: 56.5 per 100,000. It’s difficult to identify reasons for disparities along sex and racial lines. Still, the National Cancer Institute says contributing factors can include healthcare access, genetics, environmental conditions, and lifestyle behaviors.

-

Over the last several years, the rate of new cases for Americans ages 15 to 64 has increased. Between 2000 and 2019, cases rose 85% for people ages 15 to 39, who make up 3% of overall cases. They also rose 33% for people ages 40 to 64.

How much does the US spend on the military?

The United States has the world’s third-largest military and is estimated to spend more on national defense than any other nation. The 2024 military budget calls for hundreds of billions of dollars, but as of 2023, government spending on Medicare surpasses military spending. USAFacts recently [broke down]([link removed]) how much military departments get and how US spending compares globally.

[Chart showing selected federal expenditures]([link removed])

-

Since 1980, US defense spending has risen by 62%, climbing from $506 billion to $820 billion by 2023. It accounted for 13.3% of the entire federal budget for that fiscal year.

-

The 2024 budget allocates the most funding to the Air Force ($216.1 billion), followed by the Navy ($202.6 billion), the Army ($165.6 billion), the Marine Corps ($53.2 billion), and Space Force ($30.1 billion).

-

While the US spends more than any other country on defense, it ranks fifth in per-person military spending. The United Arab Emirates spends the most, $3,198, compared to $2,798 in the US.
