Colorectal cancer is the nation’s fourth most common cancer, as well as the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Recent data shows that while rates have fallen since 2000, the drop is uneven among age groups; people younger than 64 are being diagnosed with the disease at an increasingly higher rate.

In 2019, non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native men had the highest rate of new colorectal cancer cases: 56.5 per 100,000. It’s difficult to identify reasons for disparities along sex and racial lines. Still, the National Cancer Institute says contributing factors can include healthcare access, genetics, environmental conditions, and lifestyle behaviors.

Over the last several years, the rate of new cases for Americans ages 15 to 64 has increased. Between 2000 and 2019, cases rose 85% for people ages 15 to 39, who make up 3% of overall cases. They also rose 33% for people ages 40 to 64.
