When I was on the New York City Council, one of my top priorities was investing in our schools and preparing our children for the 21st century with computer labs in every school and a model program for multimedia instruction.

Now, I’m proud to see my daughter, Yvette D. Clarke, continue that legacy by not only ensuring that underserved communities are not left behind as we transition to a green economy, but also by understanding how algorithms, AI, and deepfakes can reproduce human bias and be used as tools for dis- and mis-information. She is taking the fight for civil rights to the digital age and is uniquely positioned to speak with tech leaders about the safeguards we’re putting in place to limit digital redlining and so much more.

As an immigrant myself, throughout my career, I led campaigns for citizenship and voter registration to enable my constituents to have greater rights and benefits. I even led delegations to Washington D.C. to educate Congress about immigration law and how to make it more equitable for all.

So, it goes without saying that Yvette also continues that necessary work in Congress, especially as a co-chair of the Congressional Caribbean Caucus. She’s pushed for comprehensive immigration reform and protections for both DACA and TPS recipients.

I’m so proud that my daughter took all the lessons I taught her about equality, the need for equal access, and a dedication to public service and has pushed these issues even further. She’s a true civil rights leader for the digital age.

Yvette also let me know that with her platform, she wants to focus on helping uplift other voices, and in particular, Black women. If you want to support Yvette’s continued advocacy, consider donating whatever you can between her campaign and Milk River PAC, a proud effort she spearheads that supports Democratic Black women running for office across the country! Yvette’s growth reflects our community’s growth. As we grapple with the challenges of the 21st century, of transitioning to a green economy, of addressing the needs of immigrants and students and workers, I’m honored to see Yvette rise to the challenge and take the lead on these critical issues.

And thank you for being such a strong supporter of her work here in Brooklyn. It means the world to know that she has such a strong network of supporters.
