For years, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has prioritized extractive oil and gas drilling, mining, and logging on federal public lands over the needs of communities, wild animals, and ecosystems. However, thanks to grassroots advocacy, the agency just released major new guidelines that put people and the planet first.

My name is Kim Pope and I've lived in the Southwestern United States my whole life. The public lands in the West have always been a special place to me. Not only were they spaces to recreate and find peace for my family, but they were also crucial to sustaining our livelihood. Living so close to public lands growing up gave me access to clean water and air, and helped my parents put food on the table and wood in the woodstove.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) stewards some of our nation's most spectacular landscapes -- including colorful desert canyons, the vast sagebrush sea, and old-growth forests. Unfortunately, more than 90 percent of these lands remain open to oil and gas drilling, mining, and other forms of development, which risks the clean air and water of so many families like mine.

That's why it's so important that this week, the Biden administration and BLM announced an administrative rule -- which is one of the strongest actions a presidential administration can take -- that will put conservation on equal footing with development. This is a critical course correction and a massive step in our fight to eliminate all oil and gas drilling and other harmful extractive practices from our public lands.

Write a comment today to support this step and urge further action to protect iconic landscapes and forests for future generations.

Public lands are essential to our health, climate, and livelihood. They provide connectivity corridors and habitats for wildlife, allow for natural carbon sequestration, source clean water and air for local communities, and create access to nature. The Biden administration has taken critical actions to protect lands and must continue to do more, including acting to protect mature and old-growth forests, one of our best climate solutions.

Moreover, these lands are traditional homelands of Indigenous people and include thousands of cultural and historic resources. They are stories and legacies of Indigenous stewardship, family, and cultural traditions that span generations.

This victory would have never happened without the advocacy of changemakers like you! Last year, tens of thousands of people acted to urge the BLM to stop favoring fossil fuel extraction on public land. Of the comments submitted, 92 percent supported this new administrative rule uplifting wildlife, climate, and water protections in land management.

As a child who was taught to live with a keen awareness of the ecosystem around her, I developed a strong understanding of the importance of protecting public lands for future generations. That's why it's so important and exciting to see this administration protecting our heritage, lands, and waters and maintaining a robust outdoor recreation economy.

Speak up now to share your love for public lands protections and push for even stronger action.
