** 1 Million Cases
------------------------------------------------------------
The global number of confirmed deaths from the coronavirus surpassed 50,000 and cases edged toward 1 million, according to tracking by Johns Hopkins University, as the outbreak continued to hit the United States and Europe especially hard.

And, as the Washington Post reports ([link removed]) , about 60 percent of fatalities reported worldwide have come from four European countries: Italy, Spain, France, and Britain.

More than 6.6 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week and in just two weeks, 10 million U.S. jobs have vanished, shaking the foundations of the global economy, as the
NYT reports ([link removed]) .


** Brazil’s Back to Work
------------------------------------------------------------
Ignoring the self-isolation steps advocated by his health minister, President Jair Bolsonaro recently waded into crowds at a gas station, bakery and supermarket, as supporters told him they want to keep working even as the new coronavirus spreads across Brazil with deadly consequences. In speeches and on the street, Bolsonaro is telling Brazilians that the risk from coronavirus is low and that the country should stay open for business, as the

I didn’t know Mr. Marsalis personally but saw him perform countless times. We gave him an honorary degree from Tulane in 2007.
