1 Million Cases

The global number of confirmed deaths from the coronavirus surpassed 50,000 and cases edged toward 1 million, according to tracking by Johns Hopkins University, as the outbreak continued to hit the United States and Europe especially hard.

And, as the Washington Post reports, about 60 percent of fatalities reported worldwide have come from four European countries: Italy, Spain, France, and Britain.

Jobs Vanishing

More than 6.6 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week and in just two weeks, 10 million U.S. jobs have vanished, shaking the foundations of the global economy, as the NYT reports.

Brazil’s Back to Work

Ignoring the self-isolation steps advocated by his health minister, President Jair Bolsonaro recently waded into crowds at a gas station, bakery and supermarket, as supporters told him they want to keep working even as the new coronavirus spreads across Brazil with deadly consequences. In speeches and on the street, Bolsonaro is telling Brazilians that the risk from coronavirus is low and that the country should stay open for business, as the WSJ’s Luciana Magalhaes and Juan Forero report.

“We can really pursue—full speed ahead—the deployment of wind, solar, and batteries . . . The challenge we have over the next decade is that we also need to simultaneously be improving and expanding the set of firm, low-carbon technologies,” said Princeton University's Jesse Jenkins at a CSIS event on decarbonizing the electric power sector.

A lot of people are asking me today about Ellis Marsalis, who passed away yesterday in New Orleans at 85 due to complications from Covid-19. I didn’t know Mr. Marsalis personally but saw him perform countless times. We gave him an honorary degree from Tulane in 2007. He was a patron saint of the Crescent City who inspired so many musicians including The Meters. So let’s rock with an historic Jazz Fest set by the Meters for Mr. Ellis.
