Moving Beyond the Past
One in three American adults have a criminal record.
Many are ready to own their mistakes, learn from the past, and become who they’re meant to be.
But at every step of the journey unjust laws and barriers remind them of their past.
Every person has dignity and potential. But for people with a criminal record, reaching their potential is harder than it should be. They face barriers to education, jobs, housing, and other opportunities that are essential for successful reentry.
April is Second Chance Month(R), the nationwide effort to raise awareness about these barriers and unlock brighter futures for men and women who dream of a better tomorrow!
Did you know?
There are nearly 44,000 legal barriers to a second chance. Some are silly and arbitrary. In Colorado, someone who has been convicted of any felony can’t call a bingo game. Others undermine family wishes. In Texas, a person with a felony record can’t serve as the executor of a loved one’s estate. And others set up real roadblocks to success. Many states prevent a student with a criminal record from receiving financial aid for college.
Because of these barriers, individuals with a criminal record—whether or not they served time—often struggle to create a new life.
Be the Difference—Unlock Second Chances
Stand up for second chances, and send a letter to Congress today asking them to work together to remove barriers faced by returning citizens.
We believe removing barriers to second chances is an expression of God’s message of redemption. It’s a matter of justice as well as a pathway to reduced recidivism and increased public safety.
