Every person has dignity and potential. But for people with a criminal record, reaching their potential is harder than it should be. They face barriers to education, jobs, housing, and other opportunities that are essential for successful reentry.

April is Second Chance Month^®, the nationwide effort to raise awareness about these barriers and unlock brighter futures for men and women who dream of a better tomorrow!

Did you know?

There are nearly 44,000 legal barriers to a second chance. Some are silly and arbitrary. In Colorado, someone who has been convicted of any felony can’t call a bingo game. Others undermine family wishes. In Texas, a person with a felony record can’t serve as the executor of a loved one’s estate. And others set up real roadblocks to success. Many states prevent a student with a criminal record from receiving financial aid for college.

Because of these barriers, individuals with a criminal record—whether or not they served time—often struggle to create a new life.
