Dear ,
Poynter programs are blooming this spring.
In March, we held two programs at our headquarters in St. Petersburg: The Leadership Academy for Women in Media ([link removed]) and the Media Transformation Challenge Program ([link removed]) .
We recently announced that journalists can apply to participate in a specialized reporting workshop ([link removed]) to learn what it’s like to cover immigration at the U.S./Mexico border. The program takes place in El Paso, Texas this June.
The journalists at PolitiFact ([link removed]) are busy fact-checking in the run-up to the election. The International Fact Checking Network ([link removed]) (IFCN) is celebrating International Fact-Checking Day today, April 2 ([link removed]) , and planning for its annual conference, GlobalFact ([link removed]) , in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina in June. Our world-class faculty are prepping for the Poynter Producer Project ([link removed]) and Essential Skills for Rising Newsroom Leaders ([link removed]) programs coming soon.
Training journalists all over the world is a central part of Poynter’s mission to strengthen democracy. Join us by staying up-to-date with our work and making a gift to Poynter.
Thank you for all you do to support Poynter!
Sincerely,

Poynter helps newsrooms use artificial intelligence responsibly

All eyes are on artificial intelligence these days. Newsrooms everywhere are grappling with how to experiment with and use AI to innovate their work in an ethical and responsible way that preserves journalistic credibility. Poynter is here to help and recently released a “starter kit” for newsrooms ([link removed]) to write their own guidelines on the ethical use of AI. Written by Kelly McBride, senior vice president and chair of the Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership; Alex Mahadevan, director of MediaWise; and Tony Elkins, faculty member, the guide walks newsrooms through the process of building their own policies. The template ([link removed]) uses principles of transparency, human verification, audience service and exploration as a framework for ethics policies on AI. As a next step, Poynter will collect various
newsrooms’ policies to see how they are doing.

Poynter training programs make a profound difference in the careers of journalists. The Poynter Leadership Academy for Women in Media ([link removed]) has trained over 550 women since its inception in 2015. During the week-long program, these leaders gather at Poynter’s headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida for a transformative experience. Participants add tools to their leadership toolbox, including skills to help coach their direct reports and translate their vision to bring about change.
“Poynter’s Leadership Academy for Women in Media made me feel motivated and empowered and most of all, proud of myself for all that I had accomplished as a journalist,” said Monica Richardson, in her testimonial. “It also gave me the confidence to share that with others.” Richardson participated in the program in 2018 and joined Gannett as senior vice president to lead USA Today, effective April 1.
There will be three academies in 2024: March, May and September. You can read more about the program’s March cohort here ([link removed]) . If you’d like to make a contribution ([link removed]) to help a journalist take the program, please go to poynter.org/give and reference the Women’s Leadership program in the notes field. Leading journalists from TV, radio, newspaper, and academia recently attended Poynter’s National Advisory Board annual meeting at Poynter’s headquarters in St. Petersburg. The dialogue provided insight and an exchange of ideas envisioning the future for media organizations. During the meeting, the NAB board heard updates from Poynter’s leadership regarding Poynter’s approach to teaching about the use of artificial intelligence, discussing new revenue models for newsrooms, and how Poynter is keeping its audiences informed. You can check out the members of Poynter’s NAB here ([link removed]) .
