Poynter helps newsrooms use artificial intelligence responsibly |

All eyes are on artificial intelligence these days. Newsrooms everywhere are grappling with how to experiment with and use AI to innovate their work in an ethical and responsible way that preserves journalistic credibility. Poynter is here to help and recently released a “starter kit” for newsrooms to write their own guidelines on the ethical use of AI. Written by Kelly McBride, senior vice president and chair of the Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership; Alex Mahadevan, director of MediaWise; and Tony Elkins, faculty member, the guide walks newsrooms through the process of building their own policies. The template uses principles of transparency, human verification, audience service and exploration as a framework for ethics policies on AI. As a next step, Poynter will collect various newsrooms’ policies to see how they are doing. |

Poynter training programs make a profound difference in the careers of journalists. The Poynter Leadership Academy for Women in Media has trained over 550 women since its inception in 2015. During the week-long program, these leaders gather at Poynter’s headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida for a transformative experience. Participants add tools to their leadership toolbox, including skills to help coach their direct reports and translate their vision to bring about change.
“Poynter’s Leadership Academy for Women in Media made me feel motivated and empowered and most of all, proud of myself for all that I had accomplished as a journalist,” said Monica Richardson, in her testimonial. “It also gave me the confidence to share that with others.” Richardson participated in the program in 2018 and joined Gannett as senior vice president to lead USA Today, effective April 1.
There will be three academies in 2024: March, May and September. You can read more about the program’s March cohort here. If you’d like to make a contribution to help a journalist take the program, please go to poynter.org/give and reference the Women’s Leadership program in the notes field. The Roy Peter Clark Prize for Excellence in Short Writing recognizes the work of journalistic writing of less than 800 words in any medium. The entry submission period for The Poynter Journalism Prizes recently closed with strong participation from news organizations. The winners will be announced on April 23, 2024, on the Poynter site. |
