AP: UN weather agency issues ‘red alert’ on climate change after record heat, ice-melt increases in 2023

John, the UN weather agency's recent “red alert” on climate change should serve as an alarming call to action for all of our elected officials.

In 2023, we witnessed ice loss from glaciers at a record-breaking pace and the lowest-ever Antarctic sea ice levels. Over 90% of our oceans faced heat wave conditions, posing a unique threat to marine life and disrupting global weather patterns.

What’s worse, according to the World Meteorological Organization, there's a significant chance that 2024 will set yet another record for high temperatures.

Let’s be clear: these unprecedented increases in greenhouse gas pollution, soaring land and water temperatures, and record-breaking ice-melt are the direct result of the greedy fossil fuel industry’s chokehold on our political system.

All of this is contributing to a massive humanitarian crisis — exacerbating food insecurity and displacing communities. Our most vulnerable bear the brunt of the climate crisis while the fat cats in the oil and gas industry rake in billions in profit. It's an injustice that demands immediate action.
